“We spend more than SR1 million daily on illegal workers at the Shumaisi camp,”

The government has spent about SR390 million on illegal workers for their food, accommodation and health services since the labor correction campaign began on Nov. 4, a security source said.

“We spend more than SR1 million daily on illegal workers at the Shumaisi camp,” said Col. Badr bin Saud Al-Saud, director of public relations at the Makkah police department. “Illegal workers at the camp are given the best care until they are deported to their respective countries.”

Farouk Al-Khateeb, a professor of economics at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, said the cost was high because of the huge numbers of illegal expatriates. “This figure reflects that they are given good treatment at the shelters.”

He said the government should continue its campaign to clear the market of illegals and protect the rights and interests of Saudis. He said the campaign would have a positive impact on the Kingdom in the long term.

“The money we invest on the accommodation and food of illegal workers and their deportation would be repaid through the creation of more jobs for young Saudi men and women,” Al-Khateeb said. “This expenditure would not last long.”
Meanwhile, a security official said the Haj terminal at King Abdulaziz International Airport is being used to deport illegal workers. “We have already opened 14 counters at the terminal and will increase it to 18 shortly to meet requirements.”
